Redisher Wood Nature Reserve lies south of Peel Tower, Holcombe Moor. It’s a popular route for walkers. There is a 1 kilometre long footpath referred to as 19RAM, which connects the Moorbottom Road with the path through Redisher Wood. The southern end, at Redisher Wood, is steep and often muddy and slippery, made it difficult to descend, with potential for falls.
This section is towards the end of the annual Two Crosses event, organised by East Lancashire Long Distance Walkers Association, LWDA.
Hilary Scott, Chair of East Lancs LDWA, proposed that this path should be made safer by a staircase, and offered that East Lancs LDWA would partly fund this, provided funding was matched by Bury Council and the Ramblers. Funding was then obtained by the efforts of Dave Chadwick of Bury Council, and Edgar Ernstbrunner of the Ramblers.
The work was commissioned by Bury Council, and was completed just in time for this year’s Two Crosses Event. Once the current Coronavirus problem has been overcome, it is intended that Bury Ramblers will put on a walk to showcase this new path improvement. Of course, other groups, including East Lancs LDWA, will be invited to participate, and we hope to obtain some media publicity to highlight that collaborative efforts of this kind can succeed.
We would, of course, also hope that any such publicity might encourage more to take up hill walking, and to take an interest in preserving and improving our invaluable of Rights-of-Way.
