Manchester and Salford Ramblers

Manchester City Council is consulting on a second round of proposlas to improve the Fallowfield Loop and Yellow Brick Road routes.

In our submission we have called for improved access, better signage and a diagonal sparrow!

We are very supportive of the planned improvements and make a number of detailed points on each of the sections as set out in the Consultation pages on the City Council web site.

In our original submission we argued that the Fallowfield Loop was a real community asset and efforts should be made to increase awareness of the route and what it offers. We therefore argue that there should be significant signage, information on, and directions to the Fallowfield Loop from all the major road junctions off the Loop.

Secondly, we very much welcome the inclusion in the current proposals for local information boards, new direction signs and features to tell you where you are on the route. We would be keen to contribute to this conversation and in our submission we give examples of points of interest and linked routes that should be included.

We also make specific reference to the Wilmslow Road crossing. The proposed junction improvements across Wilmslow Road seem to work well for cyclists, but the walking route should be more legible and enable the desire line to run parallel to the cycling route. It should be arranged so that it is possible to get across Wilmslow Road, the entrance to the supermarket and Ladybarn Road in one phase. This could be the location for another ‘Manchester first’ – a diagonal Sparrow crossing! - (signal controlled parallel crossing that separates pedestrians and cyclists).
